* According to Epidemic in United States 1628 - 1918, in the years 1760 - 1761 there was an outbreak of small pox in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Charleston. In the year 1761, influenza caused many deaths in North America and the West Indies. Coastal and river trade contributed to these "linked epidemics".
In 1766, The General Assembly of Maryland passed "An Act to Oblige Ships and other Vessells coming into this Province to perform Quarantine"
"Whereas great Mischiefs have Arisen from the Landing of Goods and passengers from Ships and other Vessells coming into this Province with Servants and German Passengers by Communicating to and Spreading amongst the Inhabitants dangerous infections, distempers begun at first by numbers of People being closely confined together for long times in a small space "
